The Statue of Liberty was a gift by the people of France to commemorate the centennial celebra
tion of the Declaration of Independence of the United States. It's a symbol of freedom from slavery, oppression and tyranny. It is clad in the usual roman toga with a crown that has seven spikes representing each continent. The Lady Liberty torch symbolizes enlightenment and the tablet is for knowledge.

It has become more than a symbol of patriotism but a maternal image that welcomes immigrants who are on their way to begin a new life.

Because of its nationalistic symbolism, Lady Liberty costumes have become popular choice during patriotic celebrations. You'll see men and women alike, garb in the said outfit during parades and theme parties. A typical ensemble consists of a dress, sash, headpiece and torch. The color motif is usually a lighter shade of green but it can vary.

Attending a patriotic celebration as the Lady of Liberty is a fun way of expressing patriotism. It's easily recognizable, so the nationalistic expression can never be lost. There are several Statue of Liberty costumes that can be bought online or in any retail stores. But the coolest way to enjoy the experience is by making the dress yourself, including the Lady Liberty torch and crown. Working on creating the ensemble yourself gives more significance to the celebration.

Whether celebrating Independence Day or Memorial Day, coming as Lady Liberty is a perfect way of venerating our country's independence and its advocacy for freedom from slavery, oppression, and tyranny.
